Hotel City Krone in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance

Originally, the site of today’s Hotel City Krone was home to Max Schöllhorn’s Kronenbrewery, whose history dates back to 1875. The hotel’s name and the so-called Schlaraffenkeller still serve as a reminder of this past today. Deep underground and protected by thick walls, it once served as an ice store for beer production.

Like many other buildings in Friedrichshafen, the brewery was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Alfons Schöllhorn initially built a simple guesthouse with just a few rooms on the site. Over the years, the building was continuously extended. More rooms were added, and the indoor swimming pool – one of the first of its kind in Friedrichshafen – was introduced.

In the second generation, Barbara Rieger took over the hotel from her father, together with her husband Jürgen Rieger. With great dedication, they developed it into a prestigious 4-star hotel with 118 rooms and established the City Krone as one of the top addresses in Friedrichshafen.

Today, Barbara Rieger runs the hotel together with her two sons, Max and Moritz Rieger. The junior directors became involved in the day-to-day running of the hotel in 2015. Prior to that, they had devoted themselves to competitive sailing and, as a well-coordinated team, took part in, amongst other things, an Olympic campaign in the demanding 49er class. At the same time, Max and Moritz Rieger completed their bachelor’s degrees and their training as hotel managers respectively, and gained valuable experience with international hotel groups before joining the City Krone.
